What is an allergy?

A person with an allergy has an over-sensitive immune system. Normally the immune system protects the body against harmful substances such as bacteria and viruses. It would react to allergens that are harmless and generally do not cause problems. But when a person has allergies, the body releases chemicals (histamines), causing the body to create numerous symptoms such as itching, swelling, mucus production, hives, rashes and others which will vary from person to person.

The type of allergy you have will usually dictate the type of symptom you would have. People may have food allergies (milk allergy, peanut allergy, wheat allergy, fish allergy), drug allergies, cosmetic allergies, dust allergies, mold allergies, insect allergies (from insect stings or bites), mite allergies, pet allergies (cat allergy, dog allergy), environmental and seasonal allergies such as hay fever, pollen allergies, tree allergies, grass allergies, ragweed allergies; to list a few.

The symptoms you may have to these allergies would depend upon the allergy itself. For example, a substance breathed in that you are allergic to may cause a stuffy nose, itchy nose and throat, mucus productions, coughing, and wheezing. Plant allergies usually may cause skin rashes and hives. With drug allergies usually the whole body is involved and can signal a variety of symptoms. Food allergies may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, hives or life-threatening reactions (anaphylaxis).

Other allergy symptoms could include asthma (chronic inflammatory disease of the airways), sinusitis (inflammation of the paranasal sinuses), and eczema (a form of dermatitis-inflammation of the outer layer of the skin).

Food allergies or food intolerance: an allergist will be able to tell if it is a food allergy or food intolerance. Food intolerance is more of a digestive response to food than an immune one. It is when a person cannot properly digest the food. The most common food intolerance is lactose intolerance (milk). Food intolerance symptoms would include nausea, stomach pain, gas/cramps/bloating, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, headaches, irritability or nervousness. Food allergy symptoms include rash or hives, nausea, stomach pain, itchy skin, diarrhea, shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling of airways to the lungs, anaphylaxis.

An Oceanside allergist will perform any number of allergy tests to determine what you are allergic to. These tests would include patch tests (the allergen is applied to the skin under adhesive tape), RAST tests (a blood serum test measuring allergy antibodies), prick testing (the most common of the allergy tests where a few drops of the allergen are gently pricked onto the skin surface). Upon determination of what you are allergic to, the allergist would then prescribe the correct medication for you as well as advise you how to deal with or what to avoid regarding your allergies.

The types of allergy medications your allergist may prescribe include antihistamines, (in pill or capsule form), eye drops, liquid, nasal spray; corticosteroids in eye drops, nasal sprays, lung inhalers; decongestants; or allergy shots (immunotherapy), should the symptoms become too hard to control. Allergy shots would be regularly given as to indicate the appropriate dose for control of your allergy.

The goal of an allergist is to keep you comfortable in your days with regards to all things surrounding you or that you ingest which can cause allergic reactions.
