Hives, also known as urticaria, are raised skin lesions sometimes called "welts", which appear on the skin, and can cause intense itching. They can be found anywhere on the body and can vary in size. Hives may be caused by your body's adverse reaction to certain allergens.
Hives can arise due to an allergy to certain food, medication, animal, pollen, or insect sting. The most common foods that can cause hives include milk, nuts, shellfish and eggs, but they can potentially be caused by any food.
In many cases, a complete blood work up may be indicated to find the cause of the hives. Skin testing may also help to determine the cause of your hives.
Biologic medication are available for hives that do not respond to other prescription medication.
Schedule an appointment with Ellen Epstein, M.D. to determine the cause of your hives and to implement a treatment plan.
